Local Sightings: Air Dancing in San Francisco

Imagine walking home from dinner one night, just minding your own business, when suddenly you come upon this:

They always say it’s only the tourists in a city who look up, but sometimes it’s worth reminding the locals to crane their necks from time to time.

The particular performance I happened upon last weekend was part of Flyaway Productions, an outfit run by Jo Kreiter, who teaches dance and choreographs this incredible aerial acrobatic art. Her troupe performs around the country, always propelling themselves off some man-made structure.

Between Sept 10th and 18th, they performed Singing Praises nightly at the Women’s Building, a beautifully-adorned community center for women and girls in San Francisco’s Mission District. I always enjoy walking past the colorful murals on my way to the train, but seeing dancers suspended from its roof, to the delight of passersby, was a special treat.
