As a wine country native, I can tell you that wine countriers will use just about any excuse to throw a party. From casual park picnics to sophisticated galas, Sonoma County has an event for nearly everyone this summer. Here are a few that — warning! — may ignite a burning desire for a Sonoma weekend getaway:
Aug. 20th: Movie on the Green at Chateau St. Jean Winery
Come to Chateau St. Jean in Kenwood at 6pm to start the night off with some croquet and a picnic dinner on the lawn (food and wine will be available for purchase). Then the feature — a series of Tim Burton shorts — will start at 8:30pm. More info here.
Sept. 11-12th: Russian River Jazz & Blues Festival
An event you won’t want to miss! Hosted on Johnson’s Beach right along the water of the Russian River, the Jazz Fest will feature bands like Fourplay, the Doobie Brothers and Jimmie Vaughan. Restaurants, wine tasting and the charm of downtown Guerneville are all within walking distance, too. More info here.
Sept. 24-26th: Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival
Having been numerous times before, I can say that this is a true down-and-dirty Sonoma festival. Taking place on the Sonoma Plaza, the Vintage Festival features a parade, grape stomp, a 5K run and of course tons of local food and wine to sample. If you are so inclined, there’s also a glamorous Patrons’ Gala on the first night featuring live music, samplings from 50+ wineries and delicious local food. More info here.
Oct 9-10th: B.R. Cohn Charity Events Fall Music Festival
Every year music producer/olive oil maker/winery owner Bruce Cohn hosts a top-notch music festival that attracts locals and tourists alike. If you’re into music, you’ll love seeing the Doobie Brother, Eddie Money and more. And if you’re into golf, stay until Monday (the 11th) for the Celebrity Golf Classic. More info here.
